Care questions
Can I put my Oyster Platter in the oven?
You can put your Oyster Platter in the oven for grilling as long as you do not put the ceramic into thermal shock or as long as the platter does not have gold or any other metallic lustre.
What is thermal shock?
Thermal shock is the rapid and extreme changes in temperature that ceramics experience, which can lead to cracking or even breakage. When ceramics are exposed to sudden temperature fluctuations, especially from hot to cold or vice versa, the material expands or contracts unevenly, causing stress within the object.
To avoid thermal shock for your ceramic pieces, please follow the below guidelines:
- Avoid placing ceramics directly from extreme hot to extreme cold environments or vice versa. For example, do not transfer a hot ceramic dish directly from the oven to a cold surface or immerse it in cold water immediately after use.
- Gradually acclimate ceramics to temperature changes by allowing them to cool or heat gradually. For instance, place your oyster platter into a cold oven and let the piece heat up with the oven.
- Do not expose ceramics to direct flames or sudden blasts of heat, as this can cause localized heating and thermal shock.
How do I care for and maintain my handmade ceramic pieces?
Please treat your ceramics as a piece of art. Be gentle and avoid sudden temperature changes.
Handwash your ceramic item with mild soap and lukewarm water, avoiding harsh abrasives or soaking for prolonged periods.
Additionally, store your ceramic piece away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and protect it from accidental bumps or knocks.
How to look after gold lustre
If your piece has been adorned with gold lustre or any other metallic finish, you must not put your item in the oven, microwave or dishwasher.
Are your ceramics dishwasher and microwave safe?
As mentioned above, we recommend hand washing your handmade ceramic pieces, as they are not just functional but are also a piece of art.
Although they are oven safe, we do not recommend putting them in the microwave.
Are your ceramics food-safe and lead-free?
Our ceramics will state on the product listing if the item is food safe or not.
For some sculptural items or bowls we may have used effect glazes that make the surface textured and unsuitable for food.
For all Oyster Platters, drinkware and items listed as food safe, we use high quality commercial glazes that are formulated with non-toxic materials and meet safety standards. They undergo rigorous testing to verify that their glazes do not contain harmful substances such as lead or other heavy metals, ensuring they are suitable for use with food and drink. Additionally, these glazes are designed to create a durable, impermeable surface when fired at the appropriate temperatures, preventing leaching of any potentially harmful elements into food or beverages.
